Hi Robert,

now sure what your problem would be - JX does the equivalent of running
java -version when it starts up, and makes sure it's at least 1.4 (it should
run on 1.5 and 1.6 as well).

People have had some trouble on strange linux version? What platforma
are you running on? Are you running from the shell scripts, or the install
link?

_ Chris
Chris,
I installed the JXplorer and then tried to run it. I get an error saying "Could not find a valid Java virtual machine to load. You may need to reinstall a supported Java virtual machine." I have the complete JDK installed for version 1.4.2_08 as I do quite a bit of Java development work. When I run java -version in a command prompt window it returns : java version "1.4.2_08" as expected. Do you have any suggestions on what I need to do to correct this situation.
I have just been assigned to a project where I need to configure an application to authenticate user log on using the companies Oracle OID directory. I was just looking for a client browser to use to connect up to the OID to verify login credentials I was given and to look at the structure and data. This sounds like it will do what I am looking to do so I am hoping to resolve this issue.
Thanks,
Robert Billheimer

Hi Robert,

coincidently, that is the same setup as my secondary dev box, so I don't
think there's anything fundamentally wrong here. Try running the
'jxplorer.bat' file and see if you get some more useful error messages.

The 'install anywhere' installer package is pretty good, but sometimes
messes up on non-standard systems - although it shouldn't matter, you might
try setting the 'JAVA_HOME' environment variable, if it isn't already set?

- Chris
Sorry about that I should have thought to mention that important piece of
information. I am running this on a Windows XP Professional machine. I
installed it by running the JXv3.2_install_windows.exe installer and then
I start the application by using the entry it put into my start menu. The
properties for that menu item show it is starting "C:\Program
Files\LDAP\JXplorer\JXplorer LDAP Browser.exe"

Robert

Hi Robert,

I'm delighted you got it working, even if it isn't as pretty as using the
installer link :-).

I'd guess some magic was happening with the java environment of the
Install Anywhere instance getting confused - but I couldn't tell you how to
fix it.

Still, if it's working I wouldn't worry about it any further. There's no
difference between the shell version and the link version - you may be able
to change the jxplorer.bat file to use 'javaw' instead of 'java' if you want
the console window back.

cheers!

- Chris
Well, I tried your suggestion of running the 'jxplorer.bat' file to see if
I would get some more usefull information. I did not get any more usefull
information because it worked and started up the console just fine. I
can see in the statements logged to the dos command prompt window that it
found Java just fine when I run the bat file, here are the statements from
Mar 7, 2007 12:16:30 AM com.ca.directory.jxplorer.JXplorer
checkJavaEnvironment
INFO: running java from: C:\Java\j2sdk1.4.2_08\jre
Mar 7, 2007 12:16:30 AM com.ca.directory.jxplorer.JXplorer
checkJavaEnvironment
INFO: running java version 1.4.2_08
I am still getting the following error when starting it through the
windows program menu listing.
If you think of anything else I can try that would be great, but for now
it looks like I can run it using the bat file.
Thanks for the suggestion and your time to help me, it is appreciated.
Robert
